Gold Lysimachia (Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'), also widely known as Golden Creeping Jenny or Gold Moneywort, is an excellent, hardy stem plant that brings a vibrant splash of yellow-green to golden coloration to a planted aquarium. It is highly beginner-friendly, undemanding, and serves as an exceptional contrast plant against dark green or red aquatic flora.
💡 Aquarium Care Guidelines
- Lighting: Moderate to high. While it can survive in low light, it requires stronger lighting to maintain its signature intense golden hue; lower light will cause it to revert to a more standard green color.
- Water Temperature: 15°C to 25°C (59°F–77°F). It thrives exceptionally well in cooler water and cold-water setups.
- pH Range: 6.1 to 7.8 (prefers slightly acidic to neutral water).
- CO2 & Nutrients: Optional but beneficial. It will grow perfectly fine without carbon dioxide injection, but it benefits significantly from liquid fertilizers or root tabs.
- Tank Placement: Midground to background. It typically grows upright as a stem plant in aquariums up to 15–25 cm tall, though regular trimming can encourage it to trail or creep horizontally.
🌟 Key Features
- Nutrient Indicator: Gold Lysimachia is a recognized "indicator plant". If your aquarium lacks sufficient nitrates (NO3), the plant will quickly exhibit stunted growth or stagnation, letting you know it's time to dose fertilizers.
- Emersed Transition: Stores often sell this plant grown emersed (above water). When placed in your tank, it will take 2 to 21 days to transition into its soft, submerged form.
- Easy Propagation: To propagate, simply trim the tops of the stems and replant the cuttings directly into the substrate where they will rapidly grow new root systems.
- Fauna Friendly: It is completely shrimp-safe and provides excellent low-level cover for fry and small invertebrates.
