Echinodorus osiris, commonly known as the Melon Sword or Gold Melon Sword, is a popular, robust rosette plant native to southern Brazil. Renowned for its vibrant colour transitions, its new leaves emerge in a striking deep red or golden-bronze hue before gradually maturing into a vivid green. Because it can grow up to 25 to 50 cm tall, it serves as an excellent centerpiece or background plant for medium to large aquariums.
Aquarium Care & Requirements
The Melon Sword is highly adaptable and beginner-friendly, making it a staple in the aquarium hobby.
- Lighting: Thrives in low to moderate lighting, though stronger light pushes the red coloration further.
- Substrate & Nutrients: Requires a nutrient-rich substrate. As a heavy root feeder, it benefits significantly from root tabs and iron-rich fertilisers to prevent stunting, especially under high lighting.
- Water Conditions: Prefers a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 and a temperature range of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 83°F). It has a wide temperature tolerance and can even handle slightly cooler tanks.
- CO2: Helpful for accelerating growth and enhancing color, but completely optional.
Growth & Propagation
The plant grows via a creeping rhizome system. In the aquarium, it reliably remains submerged unless it is kept in very shallow water. It propagates naturally by sending out side shoots from the main rhizome or by producing adventitious plantlets on flower stalks (peduncles), which can be snipped off and replanted once they develop independent root systems.
